CHU Mirim

Mirim Chu explores the intersection between urban space and web-based environments, approaching both as contemporary interfaces that shape everyday perception. After studying Visual Communication Design at Dankook University and working as a UI designer, she began investigating how digital structures and urban systems increasingly resemble one another. Combining and repeating pixel structures—the smallest unit of the digital screen—with geometric forms extracted from satellite views of cities, she visualizes landscapes where digital and urban environments overlap and converge.

Drawing from her experiences with early digital culture and interface design, Chu connects the structures of computer graphic tools and web interfaces with the systems and sensory conditions of the city. Through a range of media including satellite imagery, digital drawing, video, mirrors, vinyl sheets, and sculptural structures, she approaches images not as fixed outcomes, but as states that are activated and experienced under particular conditions.

In her recent works, the screen is treated not simply as a surface for displaying images, but as an interface and protocol through which images pass, transform, and circulate. Installations incorporating mirrors and reflective structures draw the viewer’s movement and gaze into the image itself, spatially revealing the processes through which images are generated and perceived.

Chu observes how images are executed, maintained, transformed, and disappear within rapidly changing digital environments. Through this process, she continuously investigates the sensory conditions of the digital city and the shifting conditions of contemporary images. She is currently pursuing an MFA in Media Art at the Graduate School of Communication and Arts at Yonsei University.
